Summers finally here and were on our 2nd heat wave since May! Enjoy the great weather but PLEASE don’t be careless about using sun factor on everyone and Please keep hydrated. UVB rays which cause sunburn and UVA rays which are more closely linked to deeper skin damage. Both UVA and UVB contribute to the risk of skin cancer.
With the increase in skin cancer diagnoses over the last decade, SPF has become a popular topic that you can find information about nearly everywhere. However, who knows which the best one to go by is, and as there is continual research in this complex area of SPF and UV Rays there is no proven 100% correct answers. Here we have come across the most popular and similar answered questions about SPF online. I hope these help…
Q: Using SPF 60 sunscreen provides twice the sun protection of an SPF 30 sunscreen.
Ans: An SPF 30 sunscreen will protect against about 97 percent of UVB rays, and an SPF 60 or higher will protect against 99 percent of rays, which is only a slight increase in protection. No SPF will offer full 100% protection for UVA/UVB Rays
Q: It’s cloudy — I don’t need to wear sunscreen.
Ans: According to the FDA, up to 80 percent of the sun’s UV rays can get through the clouds – even when it’s overcast.
Q: I found this old bottle of sunscreen in my medicine cabinet, but it’s probably just as effective as a brand-new bottle.
Ans: Sunscreens are designed to remain at original strength for up to three years. This means that you can use leftover sunscreen from one year to the next. Some sunscreens include an expiration date — a date indicating when they’re no longer effective. Discard sunscreen that is past its expiration date. If you buy sunscreen that doesn’t have an expiration date, write the date of purchase on the bottle. Also, discard sunscreen that is more than 3 years old, has been exposed to high temperatures or has obvious changes in colour or consistency. Keep in mind, however, that if you use sunscreen generously and frequently, a bottle of sunscreen shouldn’t last from one year to the next. Generally, a liberal application is 1 ounce (30 millilitres) — the amount in a shot glass — to cover all exposed parts of the body. If you have a 4-ounce (118-milliliter) bottle, you’ll use about one-fourth of it during one application. To maximize protection, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more. Apply sunscreen generously 20 to 30 minutes before going outdoors and reapply about every two hours — or more often if you’re swimming or sweating. Be sure to rub the sunscreen in well.
Q: I’m going on vacation soon, and I heard it’s better to get a “base tan” beforehand so I won’t get sunburned.
Ans: A base tan does give your skin some protection, but the reality is that any change in skin color (whether before or during your trip) is due to your body’s reaction to UV rays — a sure sign that your skin is damaged. The more frequently your skin is exposed to UV rays, the more likely you are to experience premature skin aging and skin cancer.Keep in mind, if you spend a lot of time outside and are applying your sunscreen properly, a bottle shouldn’t last you that long. By following the guideline of a “shot glass” of sunscreen each time, a 16-ounce bottle will only last you 16 applications.
