Beauty Blog Jan/Feb 2014
It’s the start of a New Year and with everyone back to school and work, we’re feeling the tiredness of the routine, the cold weather and the dark mornings, so it’s time for a little “you time”, as we are finding that many of our clients are suffering with their skin at the moment with the unusually cold weather hanging around. Skin is getting dryer, lines and wrinkles are becoming more noticeable especially around the eyes and forehead. Skin is appearing dull and grey and it’s a sure sign that you need to take care of it, as once the damage is done there is no way to undo it without the help of a plastic surgeon and a big bank balance. A skincare routine is designed to slow down the aging process as much as it can, help protect the skin from premature aging, not to stop it altogether, as that’s physically not possible unless you got a hold of the mythical fountain of youth and if you did then tell us where it is so we can seep ourselves in it, wouldn’t that be nice J. We are our own worst enemy when it comes to our skin, with the age old excuses of “I have no time” or “I can’t afford it”… nobody is suggesting you use 6 different creams or spend 10mins rubbing each one in either. A good skin care routine should only involve 2/4 items and take the same time to do as making a cup of tea.
Every day: cleanser or face wash, depending on skin type to remove make-up, dirt, bacteria, ect from skin, apply suitable moisturiser/serum.( Bottles should last 3-4 months depending on bottle sizes)
Every 7-10 days: add in to your daily routine a facial scrub, apply to cleansed and dried face, use a suitable scrub for your skin type and apply mask for about an hour, you don’t have to be relaxing for this you can still go cleaning or watching tv while it’s on. (Bottles should last 9-12 months depending on bottle size, as only use once a week)
How easy is that, and all you’ve bought is 4 things and 2 of them will last you almost up to a year (Scrub&Mask), your moisturiser/serum should last 3-6months and your cleanser/wash should last 3-6 months depending if you wear alot of makeup. Your scrub is an important part as it removes all the layers of dead skin cells to allow your mask and moisturiser to sink into skin; otherwise it will sit on top of dead skin doing nothing. All of those things only take 2 seconds to put on. Same applies for body, drink the water, scrub with exfoliating mitts and shower gel once or twice a week depending on how dry the skin is and cream every day, ideally with a natural, Mineral oil, alcohols, perfume and Paraben Free moisturisers.
A facial is recommended every 3-4 months, mainly to evaluate the skin condition and make sure you’re using the correct creams for your skin type.
WATER, WATER, WATER!! I can’t express enough how important a role it is for the hydration and protection of the skin, how well creams function for the skin and how good the appearance of the skin will be from drinking it. It’s so cheap and readily available and yet we moan about not liking the taste and not liking having to visit the toilet more often… Sound familiar? Just to point out people the more you go to the toilet the better it is as it is ridding the body of harmful Toxins so it’s a GOOD thing. However drinking water in big chunks just to say you drank it (i.e. drinking a full litre all at once is also a waste of time as it won’t have the desired effect and won’t stay in your body long enough to hydrate the organs as it is too much fluid for the body to absorb from and therefore your bladder can’t hold it so you will just end up been flushed down the toilet). Caffeinated or sugared teas and coffees, sparkling carbonated water/fizzy drinks, mi-wadi or any flavoured waters and soups are not considered part of the recommended 2 litres a day, neither is water drank with food, 30mins before food or an hour after food as the body will be busy breakdown the food. The best way to drink water is a cold pint/glass first thing in the morning to wake up the metabolism and have it ready to burn the calories during the day. Then if you’re at work/at home keep a litre bottle on your desk or in the fridge so you can refill it during the day and continue to sip from it throughout the day. If you’re going to a gym and you sweat alot try to up your water by and extra half litre/ 1 litre to replace lost fluids. If needed after excessive workouts think about a rehydration sachet which can be got in pharmacies. Once you increase you water intake it can take up to 2-3 months to see the difference in your skin so if you have a confirmation, communion, wedding ect coming up this year, start as soon as possible.
