Summer time is here and it’s never too late to start waxing for hair-free legs ect for your holidays. For waxing newbie’s, trusting your sensitive skin in intimate areas to a beautician barring hot wax on a paper strip might be a bit overwhelming. That’s why we’re aiming to calm your fears by preparing you for your first waxing appointment with these tips and information.
Waxing is a form of semi-permanent hair removal which removes the hair from the root. It is often the preferred method due to its longer-lasting affect—waxing removes hair at the root rather than just severing off hairs (i.e., when you shave with a razor or use depilatory creams). It has become a very popular and convenient way to eradicate hair from unwanted areas like the upper lip, eyebrows, armpits, legs, backs, chests, and bikini line, both for many women and men. New hair will not grow back in the previously waxed area for generally 3 -5 weeks, although some people will start to see regrowth in only a week due to some of their hair being on a different growth cycle (this is reduced when you are a regular waxier as most of the hair falls into the same hair growth cycle). Hair regrowth is completely depending on the hair type, hormone function and how regular you wax the area. No two people will get the exact same length out of waxing as each other as everyone’s bodies function differently. Almost any area of the body can be waxed, including eyebrows, face, bikini, legs, arms, back, abdomen and feet. It’s a great alternative to shaving for both men and women, most beauty therapist recommend commencing wax treatments at a young age when hair is fine and pain tolerance is higher.
There are many types of waxing suitable for removing unwanted hair.
Hot wax (despites its name) is actually viewed as been kinder to more sensitive fair skinned people as it more gloopy and flexible and requires no strip to remove it, with less trauma on the skin, however it is much longer in treatment time (which may not suit everyone) and can only be used on smaller areas like underarm, bikini and face
For women Keep in mind that many women are more sensitive in the weeks prior to their periods so waxing during that time can be quite painful for some women; while it doesn’t faze others at all. Therapists will ask you not to use creams or fragrances prior to your appointment. Come with freshly washed skin to make hair removal easier. Hair will have to be at least 1.5-2cm in length for the wax to grip the hair successfully for removal and also to elevate the pain as it’s easier to pull from the root this way. Always try NOT to shave the area in between waxes as it will thicken the tip of the hair which will make your next hair removal appointment that bit more uncomfortable. It’s also wise to wax a few days prior to a big event and ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS have a Patch Test done at least 24-48hrs before you very 1st appointment even if you change salons and you have been waxing for years, as not all salons use the same wax and you may be fine with one type and allergic to a specific ingredient in another. We have our client’s best interests at heart and would always have them patch tested first for both wax and tint as a skin allergy is not a very nice at all. Also a good tip is to never listen to everyone you ask about waxing as a lot of therapist wax in different methods so if you had a bad experience with someone then don’t rule waxing out, change to a different therapist/salon, you’ll be surprised how different therapist can be with leaving you relatively pain free during treatment. It’s always good to go on a great recommendation from someone on a therapist.
Aftercare advise will always be given at the end of the wax treatment depending on the area but the general ones are to avoid any creams, perfumes, make-up, lotions, swimming, saunas, steam rooms, deodorants, tight clothing, any heat treatments, tans and exposing the area to sun for at least 24-48 hours after your wax
To avoid nasty ingrown hairs—particularly on the bikini line—use a gentle loofah in the shower after 48hrs to help exfoliate and remove dead skin from the area to prevent clogged pores. Hair growth varies between individuals. However, typically newly waxed hair will grow back within 3-weeks to a month. Hopefully this helped answer a few questions for any new or existing wax clients.
